Breast Augmentation Implants and Risks

Cosmetic surgeons have used many different materials to create implants for breast augmentation over the past 120 years, most of which were toxic and caused health and even life-threatening complications. Today, implants are safer than ever before, and dangers to the patient’s health and safety are minimal. However, any kind of invasive surgery entails some degree of risk.

Implant Options

The main difference between the various types of implants used over the past forty years has been in terms of filling; the three choices have been silicone, saline solution and soybean oil. In addition, a special kind of implant called polypropylene or string implants consist of a special type of sponge that results in breast enlargement through expansion of bodily fluids. These cause the breasts to expand to grotesque and unnatural proportions and lead to many dangerous complications; they have been banned in the US and all European countries, but some women who work in the adult entertainment industry still have them.

The implant used in most breast augmentation procedures today is filled with a sterile saline solution. These are currently the safest type, replacing the silicone-filled implants that were found to leak and cause health problems.

Recently, doctors in the E.U. have begun using a new type of silicone implant that is much safer than the old type that caused problems back in the early 1990s. These are called the gummy bear type, and are made of solid silicone in stable forms. These have not yet been approved for use in the U.S., however.

Risks

Post-operative bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, infection of the surgical site and fluid build-up are risks that are common to virtually all types of invasive surgery. Risk factors unique to breast augmentation are breast pain or tenderness, interference with nursing, loss of erogenous sensation, wrinkling, the development of asymmetry between the breasts and rupture of the implant. Saline implants that rupture are not life-threatening, as the saline solution is non-toxic; these implants can be removed safely and quickly if need be. However, 3rd and 4h generation silicone implants, and rupture in up to 30% of all patients after 10 years.

Breast augmentation is not recommended for women who have a family history of, or at high risk for breast cancer, and implants may interfere with mammography screening.
