Botulinum therapy (abbreviated to Botox) is rapidly becoming the latest style in Sydney society and now it has become an essential part of grooming for those in the Harbour City. But I never fail to be surprised when I hear the rumours about this routine procedure.
Here are some of the more myths often encountered at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.
Mistake Number 1: I might not be able to use my facial muscles normally!
Research indicates there are around 60 muscles underneath the skin of your face. These muscles usually work harmoniously, however over a period of time lines can begin to form. Too many doses of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the musculature of the face becoming moderately less expressive. Most doctors would use comparatively small doses to result in you appearing ‘refreshed’, but still you will keep your facial expression.
By using small amounts of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right spot facial expression is maintained whilst any fine lines and wrinkles undergo a softening effect.
Mistake Number 2: Botox is a poisonous substance!
This to some extent is right. Its pharmaceutical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In large amounts it may relax facial muscles that you do not want relaxed or may even make one extremely sick.
However to put things into perspective - an ancient chemist’s expression states that ‘everything is a poison - all depending on the dose’. All medicinal drugs in a large quantity may make you unwell. In fact water can be fatal if too much is taken.
Mistake Number 3: Botox injections will be painful!
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician will use a hypodermic needle smaller than hair. Several people liken the treatments to getting bitten by a mosquito. It certainly is less sore than a procedure like a blood profile.
Mistake Number 4: I might lose feeling in my face!
This is completely untrue. Botulinum medicine works primarily on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not sensate nerve fibers. Botox only impacts on the ability to relax muscular tissues.
Mistake Number 5. Once you begin Botox you need to keep going or else you will wrinkle quicker than before!
Once Again this is just untrue.
A Botox treatment is effective for approximately 3 months. Subsequent injections do last a little longer. The lines will eventually reappear as the muscle recovers its strength. However they will not be any worse than when you commenced your treatment.
As A Matter Of Fact the lines will in general be less noticeable than if you hadn’t undergone Botox - even should you never repeat the therapy. This is chiefly so due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
