In the early stages of a SNG, you don’t want to go broke with top pair. People sneak in with all kinds of random poker hands. If you have a clean set or 2 pair, sure, go ahead and try to stack someone, but one pair poker online hands should proceed with caution. In the 1st level of SNG play (blinds 5/10), an UTG player raised to 80, an 8x opening bet. A lot of time people are too afraid to make standard raises when the blinds are small and they have a big hand. Usually this means a big casino pair. People hate to lose with AA, KK and QQ early on in a SNG. So they try to price people with strange hands out preflop, and end up winning tiny pots. When this guy bet 80, I put him on AA or KK. I had Ah-Qh. When you know exactly where your opponent is, the ball is in your court. The danger a player with AA or KK in this spot should only be to themselves. They are unlikely to be able to get away from their hand when you hit your flush/straight/set/2 pair hands. The only thing you have to do is get there. So for 80, it’s an easy preflop call with Ah-Qh in position. *** FLOP *** [Jc 2h Qc] I flop top-top. My opponent bets 20, double the min bet. I flat call. Here he’s probably trying to get me to raise him, or is actually afraid of my holding QJ. *** TURN *** [Jc 2h Qc] [10d] He checks and I check behind. I can’t think of a bet he’d fold to here with the overpair and broadway draw. *** RIVER *** [Jc 2h Qc 10d] [10s] This pairs the board and he bets half pot. There is a chance he has 99 or something so I am willing to pay this off and see. He had AA. I feel like I lost the absolute minimum with top-top.
